When I got married almost 8 years ago, I never thought I would be bundling up my baby girl in the cold to go run water for the “Three Queens” (my husband’s name for the 3 heifers we have on our property).  As I was walking out in the 23 degree weather, they were waiting for me as usual, but did not gallop as they usually do (It’s cold.  I get it. I’ll pretend they are thankful.) and I took a moment to try and shed some positive light on the chore I agree to help with:

  1. Doing chores (like walking out to run water for your barnyard friends) gives you a chance to breathe.  When you put your laptop down, throw your gravel-dusted boots on, and trek out in the cold country air, you have nothing to do but wait until that water trough fills up.  It forces you to stop, look around, and take a deep breath.
  2. Exercising can be difficult to build into your day when you are on the go as much as I am.  Chores allow are a great way to get your blood pumping!  Try these tested workouts on your own:
    • Hose Cart Crank Ab Workout (today’s choice)
    • Bessie-Got-Stuck-In-The-Mud (again) Weight Lifting
    • Rural King Receipt Chase Down Cardio
    • Pull-Down The Overhead Door Stretching
    • Hydraulic Attachment Resistance and Coordination Training
  3. Animals are hilarious.  Seriously (or not so seriously in this case), the way they look back at us humans is so funny sometimes.  I often wonder what they think of us.  Also pigs definitely demonstrate God’s sense of humor (just try feeding one a marshmallow!)
  4. Good company can be hard to come by when you have no neighbors for a solid quarter-mile.  The girls are always glad to see us (as you can tell by their expressions in the photo above taken after I came home this afternoon from town).  I know you can get a dog and have the same effect, but the queens don’t jump on me and lick my face (which is now hilarious to think about).
  5. Moo = mow.  When you fill an acre with cows, that’s one less acre you have to mow!
